Before you start: base, map and paperwork
Tam Coc village works better as a base than Ninh Binh city for this loop. The route starts at Ninh Binh Station and runs clockwise through Hoa Lu, Mua Cave, Tam Coc, Trang An, Bai Dinh, and Van Long. A bicycle covers Day 1 and Day 2 comfortably. On those days, no leg is longer than the 25 km return from Van Long to Tam Coc. The longest single ride on Day 1 is 12 km from Ninh Binh Station to Hoa Lu, taking 40 to 50 minutes by bicycle. Day 3 to Cuc Phuong National Park is the one day that needs a semi-automatic motorbike. That leg is 45 km and takes 1.5 hours. If you skip Cuc Phuong, the alternative is Phat Diem Cathedral, 35 km away, 1 hour by motorbike.
Before you rent any motorbike, sort your licence. Riding legally requires a 1968 IDP with the A1 or A2 category. Police do stop tourists on the roads around the boat sites. Without the correct paperwork, stick to a bicycle. Rentals cost 50,000 to 100,000 VND per day for a bicycle and 100,000 to 150,000 VND per day for a semi-automatic motorbike. Fuel runs about 25,000 VND per litre. A daily budget including room, meals, and tickets is 700,000 to 1,200,000 VND.
Download the loop offline before you leave Tam Coc. Distances in this plan are one-way unless noted, so you cannot rely on a signal. Signal is reliable in the villages but thin on the Cuc Phuong road. Buy tickets at each counter, not online. Boat prices and hours at Tam Coc and Trang An change with the season, so ask at the counter on the day. For example, Tam Coc boats cost about 200,000 VND and run 7:00 to 17:00, while Trang An boats cost about 250,000 VND and run 7:00 to 16:00. These can shift, so confirm before you pay.
The route, waypoint by waypoint
Day 1 covers 24 km total and is the easiest day by bicycle. Ride from Ninh Binh Station to Hoa Lu Ancient Capital: 12 km, 40 to 50 minutes. Hoa Lu opens 7:00-17:00 and the ticket is about 20,000 VND. The gates close at 17:00, so a late start pushes Mua Cave into the hottest part of the afternoon. From Hoa Lu, ride 7 km (20 minutes) to Mua Cave, open 6:00-18:00, ticket about 100,000 VND. The climb is 500 steps to the Tam Coc viewpoint; the steps are steep and have no shade, and starting after 16:30 leaves no time to climb and come back down before closing. Then ride 5 km (15 minutes) into Tam Coc, park at your guesthouse, and take a boat. Tam Coc boats run 7:00-17:00, cost about 200,000 VND and take 2 hours through the caves. Confirm the last departure at the dock. Sleep in Tam Coc.
Day 2 is the longest riding day at 62 km across four legs. Ride Tam Coc to Trang An 7 km (20 minutes). Trang An boats run 7:00-16:00, cost about 250,000 VND, take 2.5 to 3 hours, and the route is assigned at the ticket office. Continue 10 km (25 minutes) to Bai Dinh Pagoda, open 6:00-21:00 with free entry; the electric car costs about 60,000 VND. Then ride 20 km (45 minutes) to Van Long Nature Reserve, where boats run 7:00-17:00 and cost about 100,000 VND. Return 25 km (1 hour) to Tam Coc. The final stretch ends in Ninh Binh city traffic.
Day 3 should stay flexible because Cuc Phuong National Park and Phat Diem Cathedral sit in different directions. Cuc Phuong is 45 km from Tam Coc (1.5 hours by motorbike), open 6:00-18:00, ticket about 60,000 VND, with a primate rescue centre. Phat Diem Cathedral is 35 km (1 hour), free, open 6:30-11:30 and 13:30-17:00. Pick one based on your return to Hanoi: train about 2 hours (100,000-200,000 VND) or limousine van 2 to 2.5 hours (200,000-300,000 VND).
Ninh Binh Station to Hoa Lu: 12 km, 40 to 50 minutes
Ride from Ninh Binh Station to Hoa Lu Ancient Capital. Hoa Lu opens 7:00-17:00 and the ticket is about 20,000 VND. Allow an hour on foot for the temples. What can go wrong: gates close at 17:00, so a late start pushes Mua Cave into the hottest part of the afternoon.
Hoa Lu to Mua Cave: 7 km, 20 minutes
Ride from Hoa Lu to Mua Cave. Mua Cave opens 6:00-18:00 and the ticket is about 100,000 VND. The climb is 500 steps to the Tam Coc viewpoint. What can go wrong: the steps are steep and have no shade, and starting after 16:30 leaves no time to climb and come back down before closing.
Mua Cave to Tam Coc: 5 km, 15 minutes
Ride into Tam Coc and park at your guesthouse. Tam Coc boats run 7:00-17:00, cost about 200,000 VND and take 2 hours through the caves. Sleep in Tam Coc. What can go wrong: the 17:00 cutoff for boats can leave you without a ride if you arrive late; confirm the last departure at the dock.
Tam Coc to Trang An: 7 km, 20 minutes
Ride from Tam Coc to Trang An. Trang An boats run 7:00-16:00, cost about 250,000 VND, take 2.5 to 3 hours, and the route is assigned at the ticket office. What can go wrong: the 16:00 last boat is earlier than Tam Coc's, so plan this as a morning leg.
Trang An to Bai Dinh Pagoda: 10 km, 25 minutes
Ride from Trang An to Bai Dinh Pagoda. Bai Dinh is open 6:00-21:00 with free entry; the electric car costs about 60,000 VND. What can go wrong: the site is large and the electric car queue can eat time, so check your return leg before dark.
Bai Dinh to Van Long Nature Reserve: 20 km, 45 minutes
Ride from Bai Dinh to Van Long Nature Reserve. Van Long boats run 7:00-17:00 and cost about 100,000 VND. What can go wrong: this is a 20 km leg on the way to a 17:00 boat cutoff, so a late Bai Dinh start can cost you the boat.
Van Long back to Tam Coc: 25 km, 1 hour
Ride from Van Long back to Tam Coc. This is the final leg of Day 2. What can go wrong: you finish in Ninh Binh city traffic, and the last 25 km often takes longer than the estimate because of it.
Day 3: Cuc Phuong or Phat Diem
From Tam Coc, Cuc Phuong National Park is 45 km away, 1.5 hours by motorbike, open 6:00-18:00, ticket about 60,000 VND, with a primate rescue centre. Phat Diem Cathedral is 35 km, 1 hour, free, open 6:30-11:30 and 13:30-17:00. What can go wrong: the two sit in different directions, so pick one before you leave and do not try to combine them. Return to Hanoi by train about 2 hours (100,000-200,000 VND) or limousine van 2 to 2.5 hours (200,000-300,000 VND).

Getting to Ninh Binh and back to Hanoi
The train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh takes about 2 hours and costs 100,000 to 200,000 VND. It arrives at Ninh Binh Station, the start of this route: Hoa Lu, the first waypoint on the clockwise loop, is 12 km away, a 40 to 50 minute bicycle ride.
Limousine vans cover the same route in 2 to 2.5 hours for 200,000 to 300,000 VND. Check Vietnam Railways or 12Go for 2026 schedules before you commit, and book ahead for weekends, Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May, and 2 September, when seats on both fill early.
You do not need to bring a bike from Hanoi. Rentals in Tam Coc run 50,000 to 100,000 VND per day for a bicycle and 100,000 to 150,000 VND per day for a semi-automatic motorbike, with fuel around 25,000 VND per litre. Riding legally requires a 1968 IDP with the A1 or A2 category, and police do stop tourists on the loop roads.
Time your arrival for the morning. That leaves room for all of Day 1: the 12 km ride to Hoa Lu, the 7 km on to Mua Cave, and the 5 km into Tam Coc, where you sleep. Tickets on that stretch are 20,000 VND at Hoa Lu and 100,000 VND at Mua Cave, and a daily budget of 700,000 to 1,200,000 VND covers room, meals, and entry fees.

Arrive in Ninh Binh before midday
Ninh Binh Station is 12 km from Hoa Lu, a 40 to 50 minute bicycle ride and the first leg of the loop. A morning arrival keeps Day 1 intact.
Rent your bike in Tam Coc
Bicycle 50,000-100,000 VND per day, semi-automatic motorbike 100,000-150,000 VND per day, fuel around 25,000 VND per litre. Carry a 1968 IDP with the A1 or A2 category if you plan to ride a motorbike.
Plan the return to Hanoi
Train from Ninh Binh Station: about 2 hours, 100,000-200,000 VND. Limousine van: 2 to 2.5 hours, 200,000-300,000 VND and the faster option. Book the return at the same time as the outbound leg on busy dates.
Costs: what this Vietnam itinerary costs per day
A day in Ninh Binh costs 700,000-1,200,000 VND including room, meals, and tickets. That range holds across all three days if you sleep in Tam Coc and eat local. Rentals set the floor: a bicycle costs 50,000-100,000 VND per day, a semi-automatic motorbike 100,000-150,000 VND per day, and fuel about 25,000 VND per litre. Riding legally requires a 1968 IDP with the A1 or A2 category. Tam Coc boats run 7:00-17:00; Trang An boats run 7:00-16:00.
Boat tickets are the biggest single cost. Tam Coc costs 200,000 VND, Trang An 250,000 VND, and Van Long 100,000 VND. Entry fees are smaller: Hoa Lu 20,000 VND, Mua Cave 100,000 VND, and Cuc Phuong 60,000 VND. Bai Dinh and Phat Diem Cathedral are free. Hoa Lu opens 7:00-17:00, Mua Cave 6:00-18:00, and Cuc Phuong 6:00-18:00. Bai Dinh's electric car costs 60,000 VND if you skip the walk.
Meals cost 30,000-80,000 VND per person, which keeps food inside the daily budget across all three days. Order Ninh Binh goat meat, eel vermicelli, and burnt rice. Add the return leg separately: Ninh Binh to Hanoi train costs 100,000-200,000 VND and takes about 2 hours; a limousine van costs 200,000-300,000 VND and takes 2 to 2.5 hours.
Budget the daily total as 700,000-1,200,000 VND and keep the Hanoi transfer outside it. Book train or van in advance for 2026, especially around Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May, and 2 September. Boat prices and hours at Trang An and Tam Coc can change seasonally, so verify at the counter before you ride out.

Where to eat and sleep in Tam Coc
Where to eat and sleep in Tam Coc for a Vietnam itinerary
Tam Coc has the densest cluster of guesthouses and small kitchens around the boat station, so it works as the base for both nights of this Ninh Binh leg on a Vietnam itinerary. Staying in the village puts the boat station, rental shops and restaurants within walking distance, and removes any ride back after dark. Guesthouses in the village and along the lanes toward the boat dock are the standard choice. Check current reviews rather than an old list, because small places open and close often. Bicycles cost 50,000-100,000 VND per day and semi-automatic motorbikes 100,000-150,000 VND per day from nearby rental shops; fuel is about 25,000 VND per litre.
Ninh Binh's local dishes are goat meat, eel vermicelli and burnt rice, and all three show up in Tam Coc. Goat meat (thit de) is served grilled with herbs or in a hotpot. Eel vermicelli (mien luon) and burnt rice (com chay) are common on breakfast and lunch menus in the village and in Ninh Binh city. A meal costs 30,000-80,000 VND, which fits the daily budget of 700,000-1,200,000 VND including room, meals and tickets. Restaurants along the Tam Coc strip are the easiest choice if you do not want to ride after dark.
The one meal timing rule for boat mornings: eat before you ride. Boats leave from 7:00 at both Tam Coc and Trang An. On Day 1, the Tam Coc boat runs 7:00-17:00 and takes 2 hours. On Day 2, Trang An boats run 7:00-16:00 and take 2.5 to 3 hours. A quick breakfast in the village before 7:00 saves time at the dock. If your guesthouse kitchen is not open, ask the night before or pick up something the previous evening.
Boat ticket prices and hours can change seasonally, so verify at the counter. Best months are February to April and October to November. Avoid weekends, Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May, and 2 September. Book a guesthouse in Tam Coc for both nights and you can walk to dinner after a full day on the road.
1.Sleep in Tam Coc for both nights
Staying in the village puts the boat station, rental shops and restaurants within walking distance, and removes any ride back after dark. Guesthouses in the village and along the lanes toward the boat dock are the standard choice; check current reviews rather than an old list, because small places open and close often.
2.Eat goat meat (thit de)
Ninh Binh's signature dish, served grilled with herbs or in a hotpot. Village restaurants along the Tam Coc strip serve it for 30,000-80,000 VND a portion, which fits the daily budget.
3.Try eel vermicelli and burnt rice
Eel vermicelli (mien luon) and burnt rice (com chay) are the other two dishes the province is known for, and they show up on breakfast and lunch menus in Tam Coc and Ninh Binh city.
4.Eat before the 7:00 boats
Boats leave from 7:00 at both Tam Coc and Trang An. Eat breakfast before you ride, because the first boats go out early and a quick village meal saves time at the dock.
When to ride this Vietnam itinerary
February to April and October to November are the two windows that work best. Boat trips at Tam Coc, Trang An, and Van Long run on their standard timetables in those months, but prices and hours can change seasonally. Confirm at the counter before you pay.
Avoid weekends, Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May, and 2 September. Some caves close after heavy rain. Check Vietnam Railways or 12Go for 2026 train schedules before you commit.
For the boat days, start early. Tam Coc boats run 7:00-17:00 and take 2 hours. Trang An boats run 7:00-16:00 and take 2.5 to 3 hours, with the route assigned at the ticket office. If you ride to Cuc Phuong National Park, it opens 6:00-18:00 and the ticket is about 60,000 VND. Phat Diem Cathedral is open 6:30-11:30 and 13:30-17:00, and entry is free.
Plan the return to Hanoi separately: train about 2 hours for 100,000-200,000 VND, or limousine van 2 to 2.5 hours for 200,000-300,000 VND. Book ahead for holidays and weekends.
| Period | What it does to the ride | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| February to April, October to November | Best conditions for cycling and open-air boat trips | Ride the three-day loop as planned |
| Saturdays and Sundays | Tam Coc and Trang An boat stations queue early | Shift boat days to midweek |
| Tet, 17 February 2026 | Transport and rooms fill | Book the Hanoi train or limousine van early |
| 30 April to 1 May and 2 September | Holiday crowds on transport and rooms | Avoid, or book the Hanoi leg ahead |
| Wet weeks after heavy rain | Some caves close; boat hours and prices can change by season | Check the forecast each morning; switch to Van Long or Bai Dinh |
Check the forecast before you leave Tam Coc
Do this each morning at breakfast. If heavy rain is forecast, expect some caves to close and boat timetables to shift.
Confirm boat status at the ticket counter
Trang An boats run 7:00-16:00 at 250,000 VND and Tam Coc boats run 7:00-17:00 at 200,000 VND, but both can change by season. Ask at the counter rather than relying on an old guide.
If boats are off, ride instead
Tam Coc to Bai Dinh is 10 km, 25 minutes. Bai Dinh to Van Long is 20 km, 45 minutes, and Van Long back to Tam Coc is 25 km, 1 hour. Bai Dinh is free entry and open 6:00-21:00; Van Long's boat is 100,000 VND with boats 7:00-17:00.

Practical notes: rain, police checks and ticket counters
Police do stop tourists on motorbikes around Ninh Binh, so carry a 1968 IDP with the A1 or A2 category before you rent. A licence without A1 or A2 does not cover the semi-automatic bikes that cost 100,000-150,000 VND per day. Without the right IDP, plan Days 1 and 2 by bicycle and skip Cuc Phuong: the park sits 45 km from Tam Coc, 1.5 hours by motorbike and the longest single ride in the loop. Carry both the IDP and your home licence, since a photocopy will not settle a stop.
Fuel is about 25,000 VND per litre. Day 2 is the stretch that empties a tank: 7 km to Trang An, 10 km to Bai Dinh, 20 km to Van Long, 25 km back to Tam Coc, so 62 km before any detour. Day 3's 45 km ride to Cuc Phuong is the other one. Fill up in Tam Coc before leaving each of those mornings, not on the road.
Heavy rain can close caves, which makes the Trang An boat the flexible item on Day 2. Check at the ticket office before you commit the morning. Trang An assigns your route at the counter, so you cannot pick caves in advance. Prices and boat hours at Trang An (250,000 VND, boats 7:00-16:00) and Tam Coc (200,000 VND, boats 7:00-17:00) shift with the season, so ask at the counter rather than trusting a Vietnam itinerary written in an older year.
For the return leg, check Vietnam Railways or 12Go for 2026 train times before your last day. Buy the Ninh Binh Station to Hanoi ticket in advance if your dates land on a weekend, Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May or 2 September. The train takes about 2 hours and costs 100,000-200,000 VND. A limousine van takes 2 to 2.5 hours for 200,000-300,000 VND.
Sort the licence before you rent
Motorbike riding legally requires a 1968 IDP with the A1 or A2 category, and police do stop tourists. Without it, ride a bicycle on Days 1 and 2 and skip the 45 km Cuc Phuong ride.
Fill the tank in Tam Coc
Fuel is about 25,000 VND per litre. Day 2 covers 7 km, 10 km, 20 km and 25 km legs, and Day 3 runs 45 km to Cuc Phuong, so start both mornings with a full tank.
Check the ticket counter first
Heavy rain can close caves. Confirm Trang An (250,000 VND, boats 7:00-16:00) and Tam Coc (200,000 VND, boats 7:00-17:00) at the counter, since prices and hours change with the season and Trang An assigns your route there.
Book the Hanoi leg early
Check Vietnam Railways or 12Go for 2026 times. Buy the Ninh Binh Station to Hanoi ticket ahead of weekends, Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May and 2 September.
Frequently asked questions
Only with a 1968 International Driving Permit carrying the A1 or A2 category. Police do stop tourists, so carry the permit. Without it, a bicycle handles Day 1 and Day 2, and Cuc Phuong is the only stop on this route that really needs a motorbike.
Boats run 7:00-16:00, cost about 250,000 VND and take 2.5 to 3 hours. The ticket office assigns your route, so you cannot choose specific caves. Prices and hours change with the season, so confirm at the counter.
Cuc Phuong is 45 km from Tam Coc, about 1.5 hours by motorbike, with a 60,000 VND ticket, 6:00-18:00 opening and a primate rescue centre inside. Phat Diem Cathedral is 35 km, about an hour, free, and closes for lunch between 11:30 and 13:30. They sit in different directions, so pick one.
Weekends, Tet on 17 February 2026, 30 April to 1 May and 2 September. Boat stations and hotels fill on those dates. February to April and October to November give the best conditions for cycling and boat trips.
